To acquaint you with various sculptural media and methods.
Materials:
Five or six blocks of varying sizes and proportions of white pine, two or three colors and thickness of Plexiglas, carbide-tipped or fine metal blades, wet-dry papers or cloth abrasives, special buffing cloths for wheels and rouge, special solvent (non-toxic) or screws.
Method:
A) Cut five or six blocks of varying sizes and proportions from soft white pine. Cut smaller blocks from within the larger blocks so that the larger blocks now contain negative shapes. Assemble any number of the blocks by gluing them together. Work for variety in inward/outward movement. (Fig. 9.2A)
B) Repeat part A using two or three colors and thickness of Plexiglas. Shape the Plexiglas by sawing, sanding, and/or buffing it. Special carbide-tipped or fine metal blades work best with Plexiglas. Wet-dry paper or cloth abrasives, when combined with special buffing cloth wheels and rouge, will finish the cut edges. You can join the Plexiglas with special non-toxic solvent or Plexiglas screws.
